On May 21 we held our second Rapid Night Touranment of 2026. 28 players met to battle it out over a 5 round SWISS tournament, one game per round, with time controls G10 d5. New comer and President of the Boylston Chess Club, NM Andrew Hoy took first with a 100% score.
1st place: NM Andrew Hoy (5/5); 2nd place: Kaushak (4/5) ; 3rd place: NM Ryan Young (4/5) & Jose Diaz (4/5 and matching modified median). Daniel also score 4/5 but had a lower modified median. Star performer award of a lesson from NM Ryan Young went to Matthew Piatetsky.

April 17, 2026: Following the success of our first event in January, we held our second 'Beers and Checkmates' event again at Sam Adams Brewery on Friday, April 17, 2026. There was a definite increase in attendance compared to our first event. We had a later start time of 7pm and the event ended at 9pm. Thanks to Alex and Adam for organizing and running. Thanks to all for attending. We hope to run another 'Beers and Checkmates' during the summer months.

Mar 19, 2026: The first Quarterly Blitz tournament of 2026 had 27 players including a highly rated new comer, Nikhil Kalghatgi. The average chess.com rating was 1631. There were 10 rounds, with 1 game per round using SWISS pairing.
Congratulations to unbeaten Nikhil for first place with 10 out of 10, NM Ryan Young for second place and Joe Nasser for third place based on modified median. Worthy of mentioning due to a stellar performance is Diaz Starlyn who achieved 5.5 and was placed 8th.

Our annual February Fischer Random Tournament took place on February 19, 2026. In Fischer Random the opening positions of the front/back rank pieces differ to normal chess. It was a good turnout with 27 players participating with an average rating of 1541 on chess.com. Four players reported ratings 2000 and higher. There were 5 rounds, with one game a round using SWISS pairing. Time controls were 10 minutes with an increment of 5 seconds.
National Master Ryan Young took first place with 5/5; defending champ Rob Kerth came second (based on modified median) and Andrew Bernel came third. Newcomer Brian Boughton took the star performer award finishing a respectfully 8th and was awarded a JP Chess Mug.
Thanks go to Adam for being the tournament director on the night. Jamie provided the set up support.

Jan 9, 2026: Our first Beers and Checkmates event was held at Sam Adams Brewery in Jamaica Plain from 6-8pm. It was well attended and we are planning to re-run again in the future.
