October 2, 2026: The Slow Summer SWISS has wrapped up, and here are the final results: Ricardo secured first place with a perfect score of 4 out of 4. Adam took second with 3 out of 4. Four players finished with 2.5 out of 4, but third place was taken by Tom based on modified mean.

Sept 20, 2026: The First JP Chess Open was held on the afternoon of Saturday, September 19, 2026 at the South street Boston Public Library. The tournament consisted of 5 rounds and used SWISS pairing. Time controls were 10 minutes and 5 seconds delay. Games were USCF rated. Entry to the tournament was free.

The room had space for 60 players and was set up in time for round 1 to commence at 1:30pm.  The tournament lasted until 4:30pm.

The Open Section had 28 players including a FIDE Master and a National Master.  The U1400 Section had 21 players. The full results including cross tables can be found on the USCF website here.

Thanks to the Tournament Director, Adam and the Tournament Assistant, Jamie. Also thanks to Brian, Alex, Jim and others that assisted with setting up of the room and clearing up at the end. This was our first rated tournament in Jamaica Plain.

Sept 17, 2026: There's a new chess gathering on every other Tuesday, not far from Jamaica Plain. The gathering, organized by Boston_Chess_Social, is at the TimeOut market, at Fenway, every other Tuesday from 7:30pm until close. The event is free to attend and all levels are welcome. Food and drink available to purchase.  The first gathering was on September 15, 2026 and attracted around 30 players.

This is not a JP Chess organized event, but we support all chess activities, especially if it's in the neighborhood.

Sept 13, 2026: On September 12, 2026, Adam hosted the JP Chess stall at the Roslindale Farmers Market in Adams Park, Roslindale. We set up six chess boards for casual games and welcomed visitors, including members of the public and several familiar faces from the JP Chess community.

The weather could not have been better, making for a wonderful day of outdoor chess. Despite the gentle slope of the market site, the tables and boards worked surprisingly well, allowing players of all ages and skill levels to enjoy a game.

Many thanks to Adam for organizing the event and helping introduce JP Chess to the Roslindale community and spreading the word.

July 11, 2026: We had a social gathering on July 10 at Sam Adams Brewery in Jamaica Plain from 6-9pm.  We were placed in the larger tap room this time with plenty of table space for boards.

June 18, 2026: As the rain poured down outside, 26 players gathered inside J.P.Licks for our quarterly blitz on June 18, 2026. The tournament consisted of 10 rounds, one game a round with SWISS pairing. Time controls were 5 mins with no increment.

It was a tough tournament with the average rating  of 1692, six players with 2000+ ratings, and two National Masters.  NM Ryan took first place with 10/10, second place was awarded to Allen Mo with 8/10 and third place, based on modified median went to Andrew Bernel with 7/10. NM Matt Fishbein who missed the first two rounds still managed to finish with 7/10. Star performer award ( a lesson with NM Ryan Young ) went to Pascal Jacobs who finished in 6th place with 6/10 despite a 1500 rating.

On May 21 we held our second Rapid Night Touranment of 2026.  28 players met to battle it out over a 5 round SWISS tournament, one game per round, with time controls G10 d5.  New comer and President of the Boylston Chess Club, NM Andrew Hoy took first with a 100% score.

1st place: NM Andrew Hoy (5/5); 2nd place: Kaushak (4/5) ; 3rd place: NM Ryan Young (4/5) & Jose Diaz (4/5 and matching modified median). Daniel also score 4/5 but had a lower modified median. Star performer award of a lesson from NM Ryan Young went to Matthew Piatetsky.

April 17, 2026: Following the success of our first event in January, we held our second 'Beers and Checkmates' event again at Sam Adams Brewery on Friday, April 17, 2026. There was a definite increase in attendance compared to our first event. We had a later start time of 7pm and the event ended at 9pm. Thanks to Alex and Adam for organizing and running. Thanks to all for attending. We hope to run another 'Beers and Checkmates' during the summer months.

Mar 19, 2026: The first Quarterly Blitz tournament of 2026 had 27 players including a highly rated new comer, Nikhil Kalghatgi. The average chess.com rating was 1631. There were 10 rounds, with 1 game per round using SWISS pairing.

Congratulations to unbeaten Nikhil for first place with 10 out of 10, NM Ryan Young for second place and Joe Nasser for third place based on modified median. Worthy of mentioning due to a stellar performance is Diaz Starlyn who achieved 5.5 and was placed 8th.

Our annual February Fischer Random Tournament took place on February 19, 2026. In Fischer Random the opening positions of the front/back rank pieces differ to normal chess. It was a good turnout with 27 players participating with an average rating of 1541 on chess.com. Four players reported ratings 2000 and higher. There were 5 rounds, with one game a round using SWISS pairing. Time controls were 10 minutes with an increment of 5 seconds.

National Master Ryan Young took first place with 5/5; defending champ Rob Kerth came second (based on modified median) and Andrew Bernel came third. Newcomer Brian Boughton took the star performer award finishing a respectfully 8th and was awarded a JP Chess Mug.

Thanks go to Adam for being the tournament director on the night. Jamie provided the set up support.
