We had five rounds with one game per round, and used SWISS pairing. There was an intense game in round 4 with NM Ryan Young and NM Matt Fishbein playing on the delay. Congrats to Ryan (first place), Matt (second) and Elliott (third place), all of whom took home medals.
Thanks to Adam and Jim being the on-site organizers for running such a great night. Play started at 6:30pm and finished around 9:20pm and there were several new faces.
Our next tournament will be a Fischer Random (Chess960) tournament with Rapid Time Controls in February 2025.
22 players competed in the fourth quarter blitz tournament, six of whom had chess.com ratings over 2000, and two of whom were National Masters. The average rating was 1640, the highest to date in all our tournaments.

Frank DelBonis from Ocean State Chess was the tournament director and Jamie Williams was the Tournament Assistant
It was a hot sunny Sunday for the Jamaica Plain Open Street 2024 on July 21, 2024. We had our regular spot camped outside, with a tent this year, of J.P. Licks. We had 12 tables set up, 8 dedicated to the tournaments, 2 for casual chess and 2 for the Boston Creative Chess Club.
After an early morning set up, we kicked off the morning blitz tournaments a little late due to some no shows. In group A, NM Matt Fishbein took first place, Kevin came in second after 1.5-0.5 result in the final round against Ryan. Ryan took third place. In Group B, newcomers Karanbir and Kaleem took first and second, while JP regular, Dee, was placed third. Full details below for Group A.
The afternoon tournaments kicked off at 2:00pm with an additional titled player in Group A. The newcomer, candidate master Jospeh St Pierre, took first place. NM Matt Fishbein took second and there was a joint third between Ryan and Zach. In Group B, JP Chess regular James won, second was Tal and third went to Xavier.
Thanks go to our donors of prizes which included Kendall Dental Square, Monumental Market, On-Centre, The BYTE Shop, J.P. Licks, Boing Toy Shop and Papercut Bookstore. The Stealth Chess set from Boing Toy Shop was awarded to JP Chess regular Ryan so we hope to see some games with the set one Thursday evening.
In between the tournaments there was plenty of casual chess with people stopping by for a game or two. Thanks to Adam and James who helped with the setting up, administration during the day and packing up at the end.
JP chess was at the Roxbury Open Streets event on Saturday June 22 from 10:00am-4:00pm. It was a quiet start to the day but all tables were filled on occasion during the afternoon. Being our first year there we set up just six chess sets. We encountered a wide range of chess levels. While we taught the moves to some people, some local players also taught us a lesson or two! Luckily the rain held off to around 4pm.
We held our second Rapid Night tournament of 2024 on June 13th with 10 players in Group A and 12 players in Group B. Average chess.com ratings were 1835 for Group A despite missing NM Ryan Young. For Group B the average rating was 1353. It seems that the standard of chess continues to get higher and the tournaments tougher.
In Group A, Sam took first place after winning against Joe in the final round. Joe was placed second. Sebastian came third based on modified median.
In Group B, Xavier took first place beating J.P. Chess new comer Sofia. Sofia took second place. River was placed third based on modified median after beating the March 2024 Group B winner, Alexander in the final round.
Thanks to organizers Adam and Jamie for adminstering the tournament.
On May 16, 2024 we held our second quarterly blitz of 2024 with 24 players participating. The three 2000's took the top three spots. NM Ryan Young took first place (and a chess.com mug) with 10/10, followed by Sam (awarded a J.P. Chess mug) with 8/10 and then Zach with 7/10. The JP chess Star performer was Xavier finishing with 5/10. A lesson was awarded to Alex Myers with 4/10 given Xavier had previously won a lesson. There was some strange pairings in the final rounds with the SWIPS software and we may look to switch up the system at the next tournament.
A few JP Chess players participated in the 5th Brookline Blitz Chess tournament on May 4, 2024 and a couple of them, Adam and Daniel, took home prizes. Congrats to both of them. Daniel kindly awarded his trophy to a young player who had the same points as himself. A non JP Chess player, GM Daniel Naroditsky, took first place in the Open section (see photo below).

NM Ryan Young was first, NM Matt Fishbein was second and WFM Roza Eynula was third.
